    Strength training and general conditioning

    This fitness class is a combination of strength training and conditioning designed to increase power, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and coordination while building muscle and burning fat. Equipment such as medicine balls, resistance bands and weight bars are used to target each participant’s ability. Come experience overall improved fitness while being coached by trainers from NBS Fitness in Memphis.

    When:  Fridays at 12pm - Classes will resume on January 12, 2018.

    An all-levels class that will move, groove, and flow to upbeat music. With good humor and lots of laughter, learn how to advance your practice without taking yourself or your practice too seriously. 
    ​​With a different sequence and peak pose every week, this class will stay interesting and challenging as we move and breathe our way to happier hearts and more relaxed bodies.

    ​When: ​11am​ on  January 12, January 26, February 9, February 23 + March 9

    The strength and balance class will be a 45 minute class designed for seniors and people with type 2 diabetes. Participants will work with light hand weights, resistance bands and small inflatable balls. Class will start with a brief warm-up followed by strength training and light cardio, finishing with a cool down and stretch.

    Get Outside! Strength + Balance is part of Shelby Farms Park's Get Outside! Fitness Programs. This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.

    Relieve stress and increase flexibility by participating in Tai Chi classes led by a certified instructor Richard Link, a Senior Trainer at Tai Chi for Health Institute. Tai Chi is an ancient practice that is enjoyable and safe for every fitness level. The slow, meditative movements of Tai Chi increase strength, range of motion and coordination. Classes can be enjoyed either sitting or standing. Comfortable shoes and loose clothing are recommended. Please bring a personal water bottle.

    During this mental fitness workshop you will learn to clear your mind of stress from the work week and get recharged to tackle life's challenges and curve balls with a happy and upbeat attitude. Each week’s session is unique and covers a range of topics like Nature of Stress, Tendencies of the Mind, Meditation, Secrets of Breathing, Overcoming Depression & Anxiety Naturally, Raising Ones Energy, Finding Balance in Life and many more. The sessions combine simple yoga, breathing techniques, meditation and relaxation, and practical wisdom.

    When:  Saturdays at 10:45am

    Who: Ages 18+ (no prior experience required; experienced practitioners may benefit, too)

  • Trekkers Family Hike

    Trekkers FAMILY Hike

    Join us for monthly guided hikes geared toward ages 50+! Hikes are dependent on weather, so please call (901) 222-7275 for the latest trail conditions before heading to the Park.

    Led by a Shelby Farms Park Interpretive Docent, these walks are geared toward those ages 50+ and their families.  Our walks, which are on paved trails, will provide exercise at a comfortable pace.  You'll enjoy a chat about Park history and wildlife including buffaloes and birds.  Reservations are not required.  There is no cost for these events, but donations to the Park are appreciated.  Remember your walking shoes, appropriate outdoor clothing and water bottles!  Due to the tripping hazard, pets should stay home. 

    Location:  Meet at the First Tennessee Foundation Visitor Center

    When: First Sunday of each month, 2-3pm from November to May
