Get Outside! Fitness Programs 

Introducing Get Outside! Fitness Programs at Shelby Farms Park. These new free fitness programs offer a chance for the whole family to get fit, stay active and enjoy being in nature! This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.

Classes are subject to occasional time or date change or cancellation.  Please check the calendar for most updated schedule. 

January through March classes are held indoors and space is limited.  Advanced registration is recommended. To register, please fill out this form

Nature Boot Camp

Strength training and obstacle course

This group fitness class promotes fat loss, camaraderie, and team effort. They are designed to push people a little bit further than they would normally push themselves in the gym alone. These classes are use body weight exercises like push ups, squats, burpees, lunges and suspension training, interspersed with running and competitive and stations. The idea is that everyone involved works at their own pace as they team up and work towards one goal, either in pairs, small teams of three or four, or even two teams head on.

When: Thursdays at 7am

Better Body Boot Camp

Strength training - uses only the body

Better Body Bootcamp is a 60 min high impact body weight training fitness agenda to focus on using a range of all over body to muscle isolation workouts with little to no equipment. Participants will sweat, be push to their next level, and to expect to be kept on their toes. Expect to "come in strong and crawl out stronger." 

When:  Fridays at 7am Starting February 17

Family Zumba

Dance based fitness class

Zumba® Fitness is a Latin Dance based fitness movement. By incorporating rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Bhangra and other world music, everyone is welcomed and united through dance, culture and fitness. On average, 650-800 (often times more) calories can be burned in an hour of Zumba®! You may ask, do I need to have rhythm or be a dancer to participate? Absolutely not! Just have a love for fun and smiling, and the rest takes care of itself!

When: Every other Saturday at 3:30 pm
2017 January through March dates:  January 28, February 11, February 25, March 11, March 25

Strength + Balance

The strength and balance class will be a 45 minute class designed for seniors and people with type 2 diabetes. We will be working with light hand weights, resistance bands and small inflatable balls. Class will start with a brief warmup followed by strength training and light cardio, finishing with a cool down and stretch.

When:  Tuesdays at 1:30pm

Adults + Kids Yoga

Basic yoga

An all-levels class that will move, groove, and flow to upbeat music. With a different sequence and peak pose every week, this class will stay interesting and challenging as we move with the breath and flow our way to happier hearts and more open bodies.

With good humor and lots of laughter, learn how to advance your practice without taking yourself or your practice too seriously. This is a perfect class for people new to yoga, or students who want to re-connect with their fundamentals. Emphasis is placed on a strong foundation practice that you can build on for years to come. Basic postures, as well as transitions, like step-throughs and chatturangas, will be covered in depth.

Kids Dance

Dance classes for kids

This class introduces a structured environment that allows children to use their imagination while learning about their bodies' mobility. We will be dancing, learning about rhythm, playing games, and expressing ourselves through movement by exploring different styles of dance through multiple 6-week sessions.  Pick and choose your sessions or join them all!  No prior experience is needed.  Experienced dancers also welcome!  

Recommended ages: 6-14 years old

The 6-week sessions will be:
Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, Modern, Ballroom

Ballet Classes
When: Sundays at 3 pm (1 hour classes)
January 15, January 22, January 29, February 5, February 12, February 19

Yurt at the Woodland Discovery Playground

Each student needs to bring:
  • Fitted clothes or active wear (i.e. leggings or tights)
  • Ballet Shoes*
  • Long hair pulled back
  • Water bottle

*We will have a very limited supply of ballet shoes for students to borrow depending on shoe sizes.  Email to check availability. 

* Registration is not required, but recommended.

Tai Chi

Relieve stress and increase flexibility by participating in Tai Chi classes led by a certified instructor Richard Link, a Senior Trainer at Tai Chi for Health Institute. Tai Chi is an ancient practice that is enjoyable and safe for every fitness level. The slow, meditative movements of Tai Chi increase strength, range of motion and coordination. Classes can be enjoyed either sitting or standing. Comfortable shoes and loose clothing are recommended. Please bring a personal water bottle. 

When: Wednesdays at 3pm

Lakefront Fitness

This fitness class will be a combination of strength and conditioning designed to increase your strength, power, stamina, cardiovascular fitness, and coordination while building muscle and burning fat. Come experience overall improved fitness while being coached by the best trainers in Memphis from NBS Fitness.

When: Tuesdays at 12pm
Where: Buffalo Room in the First Tennessee Foundation Visitor Center

Mental Fitness: Happiness Wellness Series

During this "mental fitness" workshop you will learn to clear your mind of stress from the work week and get recharged to tackle life's challenges and curve balls with a happy and upbeat attitude. Each week’s session is unique and covers a range of topics like Nature of Stress, Tendencies of the Mind, Meditation, Secrets of Breathing, Overcoming Depression & Anxiety Naturally, Raising Ones Energy, Finding Balance in Life and many more. The sessions combine simple yoga, breathing techniques, meditation and relaxation, and practical wisdom. 

When: Saturdays at 10:45 am
Where: Wolf Room in the First Tennessee Foundation Visitor Center
Who:  Ages 18+ (no prior experience required; experienced practitioners may benefit, too)

Strictly Business Walking Club

Interested in exploring the trails at Shelby Farms Park? There are countless physical activities out there, but walking has the lowest participation rate of them all! It's the most simple change you can make to effectively improve your heart health. Research has shown that the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day will change your life! Join the 'Strictly Business' Walking Club to participate in positive, low impact exercise. Bring a family member or friend and join today!
