The environmentally sensitive design, funded by Shelby County Government and a matching grant from TDEC, is fully ADA accessible, and will replace the current facility near the Plough Park area of Shelby Farms. "We are excited about this project for many reasons," said lead designer Juan Self of Self Tucker Architects. "First of all, as stewards of the environment, we have incorporated sustainable principles in the design of this important facility."
The design includes:
- Selection of highly durable materials and fixtures
- Use of 100% recyclable materials
- Orientation to maximize summer breezes and protect from winter winds
- Light colored reflective roof to reduce the heat island effect
- Abundance of daylight in all areas
- Occupancy sensors
- Minimal site impact
- Low water consumption
- Low energy consumption
