The Park Goes, "Tweet."

My friends, you are reading the blog of a blogger who does not have a MySpace page.  Do not attempt to adjust your computer screen.  Your eyes do not deceive you.  My name is Jen, and I don’t have a MySpace page.

As a member of Generation Y* (the iGeneration) I feel compelled to at least try to do right by my fellow Millennials, but it’s hard, you guys.  I have a blog, I can work my iPhone reasonably well, I’ve programmed a few robots--I’m doin’ ok. Not a totally lost cause.  I think each generation, by virtue of the times in which its members come of age, inherits certain skill sets that might seem esoteric to other generations.  I grew up watching my dad take apart and put together computers.  There was never a learning curve for me.  Cyber-language and technospeak were part of my vernacular.  I made many beautiful Microsoft Paint masterpieces as a child (Remember the spray paint feature?  Heaven).  Fortunately, I was raised in the sticks, so I had a good balance of digging in the dirt and surfin’ the Web.

The social media revolution came about during my college years.  It’s been a little more of an adjustment, but I’m getting there. What’s my status?  It’s complicated.
The Internet is a many splendored thing, and I want to hold it up to the light and appreciate its myriad gifts (I’m thinking specifically of LOLcats and the Klingon Language Institute.  If you don’t know, ask the Internet.  It will tell you).  That’s why I’m determined not to fall too far behind my generationmates in this whole social media thing.

That’s also why the Park now has a Twitter feed.  Tweet! Please follow us.  I’m posting a few times a day to provide my loyal followers with various and sundry Park miscellany that ranges from the very interesting to the very very interesting.

And as if that weren’t enough--as if I hadn’t given you an incredible cyberpresent--I have a few other highly advanced technological whoosits coming down the series of tubes.  Stay tuned.

So here are the things I want to know.

1.    Baby Boomers and Gen-Exers, what are your skills sets or appreciations that the other generations don’t have?
2.    Who would win in a battle between Klingons and robots?**
3.    What role do you guys think web-based social media can/should play in a park?

As always, please talk back to me.  You can register and leave your comments in the comment doodad, or if you’re shy, you can reach me at jandrews@shelbyfarmspark.org.

*This is a technicality.  In spirit, I’m a surly old man who drinks coffee and reads the paper and gets riled up watching the evening news.
**No references to the ‘Borg, Trekkies.  I won’t have it.  I said robots.

Klingons

As a taggend baby boomer I feel we have the skill to be high end slackers, but smart enough pretend we are hard at work. True boomers would scoff, and Gen-xers couldn't be bothered to act busy.

Like you say, its complicated. R we talking Klingons of the captain Picard era or Klingons of the Captain Kirk era?? Picard's Kligons were tough and honorable, Kirk's Klingons were a bit swarmy.

Web-based socializing is sweeping thru the middle aged, not sure how long it will last, but if it keeps grawing at the current pace, everyone who graduated from high school in 1980 will be unemployed due to the countless hours on facebook.

Now I suppose we all have to get a twitter account so we can keep up with the SFPC...

Of Surliness, Klingons, Robots, and Social Media

I AM a surly old man who drinks coffee, reads the newspaper, and gets riled listening to (not watching) the evening news. Morning too, most days.

Not being either a Baby Boomer or a Gen-Exer, and not having a Facebook page, I’ll leave the first question to those who are and/or do.

In a steel-cage grudge match between a Klingon and a robot, it would depend on the robot. But out in the open, over time, it’s Klingons all the way. No doubt.

Regarding web-based social media’s role in a park, probably the best thing would be spreading the word about opportunities and experiences to those using such media, which wouldn’t include me. But then you’re looking for people who’ll sort of grow up with the park and develop a long-term bond with it, and who would, we hope, volunteer and donate to it.

Klingons-1, Robots-0

Right on, Bill.  My buddy Sean says robots, but since he didn't formally post it, I'm not counting it.

Also, many thanks to Dave, who aptly pointed out that I encourged you guys to follow me on Twitter and did not link to my feed...which surprises no one.  Anyway, that issue has been fixed.
